The Three Ultimate Teases

So far there have been three teaser trailers that have movie fans counting the days until their release. In pure tease fashion I will take some time to talk about the art of the tease trailer with you guys before revealing the three trailers I have picked as the Ultimate Teases. I don't know if it is just my absent mindedness, but it seems like this year teaser trailers have been having a much larger effect than in any of the previous years. There really is a phenomenon going on, and it is fascinating to watch how it effects movie fans all around the world.

Without a doubt there is an art to making the perfect teaser trailer; it requires perfect  build-up, and deception, and timing. Build-up for the film must be gradual, starting with revealing only bits about the film at a time and then gradually releasing casting info, teaser photos, and ever details about the development. Then there must be a deceptiveness in how that information is revealed. Never giving away too much, always leaving audiences begging to know more and then giving us the bare minimum of extra information. And finally, timing. The timing for a teaser trailer is crucial to how effective it is. If it is just released one day, out of the blue, then there will be no buzz about it, and it will be more likely that it may go completely unnoticed.

Now that I have briefly giving my take on how the perfect teaser trailer is made as effective as it can be, it is about time I reveal my three choices for the Ultimate Teasers. I doubt I will get much argument because I have seen first-hand the effect all three have been having on movie fans. I could just mention and an all-out debate would erupt with predictions about how great they will be and the unreachable expectations that are being put on the three films I will reveal momentarily. So, I expect debate on which will be better and I expect for the fanboys/gals to have a field day. Alright, I am done stalling. Here are the three Ultimate Teases:

3. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

When did the build-up for this film officially begin? For me, I would have to say the moment the film ended. The Dark Knight is arguably the greatest Batman movie ever. Christopher Nolan single-handedly revived the dead franchise in 2005 with his splendid telling of the creation of Batman with Batman Begins. Then he took the franchise to new levels with the extremely dark-toned, The Dark Knight (2008)m which is one of the most entertaining, and even deepest comic book adaptations I have seen. Then there is the tragedy of it all. A lot of the hype for The Dark Knight Rises comes from the overwhelming fascination with how the loss of Heath Ledger who created the greatest Joker ever - maybe even the greatest comic book villain - will be dealt with. The casting of British actor turned Hollywood rising star Tom Hardy ( Bronson and Inception) as the replacement villain Bane should be a satisfying change. Also, Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married) being cast as Catwoman is also a very attractive addition. All in all, The Dark Knight Rises has a lot going for it, especially with the reliability of Christopher Nolan as director, but all comic book based franchises crash and burn sometime. Nonetheless, I see Nolan working his magic again and adding another great addition to his very own Batman saga.

2. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2012)

David Fincher's return to thrillers after a two project exploration of his talents that lead him to direct two of his deepest and most well-rounded films, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) and The Social Network (2010). Based off of the worldwide best-selling novel of the same name which is the first book in late Swedish author Stieg Larsson's Millennium series. The entire series has already been adapted into three commercially successful Swedish films, but those films seemed to be more concerned with the portrayal of the title character of Lisbeth Salander - played wonderfully by Noomi Rapace - rather than faithfully adapting Larsson's stories which are three of the best crime-thriller books of the last twenty years. Rooney Mara (The Social Network) with play Lisbeth Salander and Daniel Craig (the current James Bond) will play journalist Mikhael Blomkvist. The success of the novels alone brings so much hype and with the direction of David Fincher who is one of the best directors working today adds to the height-less expectations. I really hope his adaptations do more justice for Larsson's genius series than the disappointing Swedish ones.

1. The Avengers (2012)
This is the film that all of the comic book adaptations of this and last decade have been preparing us for. The Avengers will feature just about every comic book superhero - Batman and Superman excluded. Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), with the Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johnasson also appearing. A film about a team of popular superheroes working together to fight evil is such a great idea and to see A-list stars at the height of their popularity playing our favorite superheroes...well, that is irresistible. I think it is much more likely that this film will be disappointing than the previous two, but after a decade of superheroes coming to screen with the purpose - intention or not - of making this film a possibility, this teaser trailer just has to be #1.

There are my picks, I hope you like them. As for all of my posts, I hope this stirs up some strong feelings and I hope you let me know your opinions. I think this was a good little topic to use as the initiation for the new directions I am trying to take with my blog. So, let me know your opinions and don't be shy about commenting. My personal favorite of the three is The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, what is yours?

  1. If your personal favorite is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, then why isn't it listed as #1? Confusion aside, this post was a very refreshing read. Although I'm not really excited to have to put up with more superhero movies, I'll no doubt end up seeing both The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers due to the immense hype surrounding them. I think I'm most excited to see David Fincher's next effort though, just because the teaser trailer was so amazing it nearly gave me a heart attack. Keep up the good work, Adam!

  2. The Dark Knight Rises is the only one I really feel inspired to see. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo looks faintly interesting, but The Avengers (at least, to me) looks like it will be cluttered, and lacking of anything even remotely fresh and original. Still, nice to see you make a new write-up, even if I don't agree with you at all :P

  3. I liked it. Good job on talking about something different that still relates to film. However, I must add that Nolan's Rises is supposed to be conclusion, so it'll be the conclusion to a trilogy. Just putting that out there.
Hope you do some more creative movie related stuff.
